Your Style

Selecting Your Home Style

This is one of the most important first steps in building the home of your dreams. The style of your home will be determined not only by exterior appearance but will depend upon your building site– property location, slope, and earth characteristics. At this time, you will also decide on the number of bedrooms, bathrooms, and garage needs.

Choosing Your House Plan

  • Have Fun! Designing a custom homes is, for many people, the culmination of a lifelong dream. Enjoy it! Be passionate about your desires and select people to help you who are passionate about helping you achieve your goals. This can be one of the most satisfying experiences of your life.
  • If you have your new home site selected, ask Scott, our President and Designer to visit the site so that you can be guided towards a plan that fits your property. Not all homes are appropriate for every lot.
  • Decide what is important in your new custom home. This is more than just square footage. Think about how you want to live: are you formal or casual. What are your interests, hobbies, likes, and dislikes? Consider accommodations for your children/grandchildren, pets, and guests?
  • Take pictures of your special art pieces and furniture for Scott, our President and Designer. Your new house plans should accommodate your favorite furniture and art treasures as well as it does for you and your family. Cut out pictures from magazines that you love. A picture really is worth a thousand words.

How Do I Select A House Plan?

  • Size: How much house do you need? Obviously, if you have a “growing family” your space needs are different from those of an “empty nester”.
  • Configuration: One level or two story? Generally, this is a “lifestyle decision” in terms of preference. For example, many retirees want one-story living or at least the Master Bedroom on the first floor. Young families may wish to have all bedrooms in close proximity to one another for safety reasons. Also, lot size restrictions and overall project costs have a bearing on this decision.
  • Architectural Style: Cottage, Bungalow, Craftsman, Cape, Colonial, etc. This is a matter of “personal preference”. It is important that you become familiar with the variety of styles available. Bring Us Your Ideas!
  • Specifications: You’ll need to focus on the materials you wish to incorporate in the building of your new home. Siding, roofing, flooring options are those to name a few. Frequently, we use allowances on certain items to give additional flexibility to our clients. An Allowance acts like a budget and pertains to a specific set of selections.
  • Orientation: Be sure to keep in mind the orientation of the rooms in relation to the property site and its North-South orientation. Ask yourself which rooms you want to have a southerly exposure, etc. Remember, with Scott’s Expertise, you can always do a “reverse floor plan” to take advantage of the building site of the terrain of your lot.
